Describe movement in a straight line using a compass

Introduced in the Year 2 curriculum as: "Use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockw"

On a map, North is the direction that points straight up. The other directions

look like this:

You can remember the directions using the following rhymes:(N) Never (E) Eat (S) Shredded (W) Wheat.

and(N) Naughty (E) Elephants (S) Squirt (W) Water.


Example 1:

Which direction is opposite to N ?

The answer is S


Example 2:

Which direction is a quarter-turn clockwise from S ?

The answer is W


Example 3:

Which direction is a quarter-turn anti-clockwise from S ?

The answer is E


Example 4:

Which direction is opposite W ?

The answer is E
