Compare and order lengths, masses and capacities and record the results using >, < and =

Introduced in the Year 2 curriculum as: "Compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and ="

Lengths, masses and capacities can be compared and ordered using greater than, less than or equal to.

We can use the symbols > < and =

Remember:

1m = 100cm

1kg = 1000g

1L = 1000ml

Example 1:

1kg [ ] 100g

What symbol is missing?

Well, 1kg is greater than 100g

So, 1kg > 100g

Example 2:

50cm [ ] 1m

What symbol is missing?

50cm is less than 1m

So, 50cm < 1m

Example 3:

1L [ ] 1000ml

What symbol is missing?

Well, 1 Litre is equal to 1000ml.

So, 1L = 1000ml

Example 4:

105cm > 1m

Is this true or false?

This is true because there are 100cm in 1m. 105cm is greater than 100cm.

Example 5:

500ml + 250ml < 1L

Is this true or false?

This is true. 500ml + 250ml equals 750ml.

750ml is less than 1L.

Example 6:

Is 100g less than or greater than 1kg?

100g [ ] 1kg.

100g < 1kg because there are 1000g in 1kg.
