Money: calculating change

Introduced in the Year 3 curriculum as: "Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts"

Number line subtraction is a good method to use when subtracting from a

number ending in two or more zeroes.

Remember £1 = 100p, £2 = 200p etc.

Example 1: What is £1 - 23p?

Answer: 100p - 23p = 77p

Example 2: What is £5 - £1.40?

Answer: 500p - 140p = 360p = £3.60
