Money: counting with coins

Introduced in the Year 3 curriculum as: "Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts"

When counting with money, always start with the coins with highest value first.

= 50p + 20p + 1p = 71p

Remember what makes £1:

Example 1:

= 50p + 10p + 10p + 10p + 1p + 1p = 82p

Example 2:

= 20p + 20p + 10p + 5p + 2p = 57p

Example 3:

= £1 + 10p + 10p + 10p + 5p + 5p = £1.40

Example 4:

= £1 + 20p + 20p + 5p + 2p = £1.47

Example 5:

= £1 + 50p + 20p + 10p + 5p + 2p + 1p = £1.88
