Time: 5, 10, 20, 25 past the hour

Introduced in the Year 3 curriculum as: "Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours; use vocabulary such as o’clock, a.m./p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight"

To work out how many minutes past, look at the number the long hand points to. Then, times by 5.

'10 past 8' can be written 8.10, too.

Example 1:

This clock says 10 past 8 (or

8.10).

The long hand points to the 2,

and 2 x 5 = 10, and the short

hand points just past the 8.

Example 2:

This clock says 25 past 9 (or

9.25).

The long hand points to the 5,

and 5 x 5 = 25, and the short

hand is past the 9.
