Transformations: describing translations

Introduced in the Year 4, Year 5 curriculum as: "Describe movements between positions as translations of a given unit to the left/right and up/down"

A translation is a type of transformation which simply moves the shape. It maps one shape onto another.

We can describe how a shape has been translated by saying how far right/left and how far up/down it has been moved.

Shape A is mapped onto shape

B by a translation of 3 to the

left and 4 down

Hint: pick a point on the original shape

and see where it is on the new one
