Calculating the perimeter of rectangles

Introduced in the Year 4 curriculum as: "Measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres"

The perimeter of a shape is the distance around the outside.

We can count this, but it's quicker to work it out:

length + width + length + width

or quicker, do

length + width then double it

Example 1:

Perimeter = (

4 + 2

) x 2

= 12cm

Example 2:

Perimeter = (

5 + 1

) x 2

= 12cm
