Calculating area (by counting squares)

Introduced in the Year 4 curriculum as: "Find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares"

The area of a shape is how many square cm are inside.

To work out the area of a rectangle, count how many square spaces are

inside the rectangle.

We must always put square cm (cm²) as our unit.

Example 1:

The area of this rectangle is 8cm² (square cm).

This shaded square is 1cm²

Example 2:

The area of this rectangle is 5cm² (square cm).
