Counting on/back in 10s and 100s

Introduced in the Year 4 curriculum as: "Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate"

When we count in 10s we add to the Tens digit. When we count back in 10s,

we take away from the Tens digit.

Example 1:

10

0

4 + 6

0 = 10

64

Example 2:1

4

8

1 + 2

0 = 1

5

01

(since the 80 + 20 = 100,

the hundreds digit changes too)
