Word problems involving multiplication (x2, x5, x10)

Introduced in the Year 4 curriculum as: "Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12"

When you solve a word problem, some key words tell you what to do.'Altogether ', or ' total ', will often mean × (times), especially if the word

'each' is in the question.

Example 1:

Three boys each have ?2. How much money do they have altogether?

Answer: 3 × ?2 = ?6

Example 2:

In our classroom there are 5 rows, with 3 desks in each row. How many desks in total?

Answer: 5 × 3 = 15 desks
