Inches, feet and centimetres

Introduced in the Year 5 curriculum as: "Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric units and common imperial units such as inches, pounds and pints"

Sometimes we use inches and feet to measure length.

An iPad is about 9 inches wide, an iPhone is about 4.5 inches wide.

1 foot = 12 inches

We use symbols for inches and feet:

8'' means 8 inches and 2' means 2 feet

If someone is 4'5'' , they are 4 feet and 5 inches tall.

Convert 15'' into feet and inches :

Well, there are 12 inches in a foot , so 15 ÷ 12 = 1 r 3

Which makes 1'3'' (1 foot 3 inches)

What is 1'5'' + 2'3'' ?

Well, add the feet then the inches : 3'8''
