Calculating the area of a parallelogram

Introduced in the Year 6 curriculum as: "Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles"

Parallelograms are part of the quadrilateral family.

They have two pairs of parallel sides that are equal in length, and their opposite angles are also equal in size.

Example 1:

A parallelogram has a length of 6cm and a height of 10cm.

What is its area in cm²?

We multiply 6cm x 10cm which equals 60cm²

Example 2:

The area of this parallelogram is ? cm²

The base is 8cm and the height is 5cm,

so we multiply 8 x 5 = 40cm²
