Calculating the area of a triangle

Introduced in the Year 6 curriculum as: "Calculate the area of parallelograms and triangles"

You can see here that

a triangle is half of a

rectangle.

Remember, you work out the area of a rectangle by multiplying the base length by the height.

Since a triangle is half a rectangle, we can work out its area by calculating base times height and dividing by 2.

Area of Triangle = base x height ÷ 2

The area of this triangle is

6 x 4 ÷ 2 = 12 cm²

The area of this triangle is

10 x 3 ÷ 2 = 15 cm²
