Adding negative numbers

Introduced in the Year 6 curriculum as: "Use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero"

Look at this scale:

When we add to a negative number, we move up the scale just like we do

when we add to a positive number.

When we subtract to a negative number, we move down the scale just like

we do when we subtract from a positive number.

Example 1: -5 + 3 = -2

Example 2: -2 - 3 = -5

(start on -5 and move

3 up the scale)

(start on -2 and move

3 down the scale)
